Background

The ASEAN Economic Community 2015 will transform ASEAN into a stable, prosperous and highly competitive region functioning as a single market and production base characterised by free flow of goods, services and skilled labour, and freer flow of capital, along with equitable development and reduced poverty and socio-economic disparities within ASEAN and across its Member States. Simultaneously, consumers will also have a wider choice of safe and quality goods. The food sector is of no exception. It is in this context that an ASEAN single market for food is being constructed as clearly stated in the ASEAN Economic Community Blueprint for food and agriculture which is to enhance intra- and extra ASEAN trade and long-term competitiveness of ASEAN’s food and agriculture.
